It is our hope
That all the world's oceans
Be joined in peace,
So why do the winds and waves
Now rise up in angry rage?

Emperor Mutsuhito
Shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu
The Tokugawa Shogunate was in power in Japan for 250 years. The last of the Tokugawa Shoguns, Tokugawa Yoshinobu, resigned in 1867 because of increasing political and military pressure from regional samurai powers. His resignation marked a large change for Japan as a country. Soon the country of Japan would be increasingly industrialized and modernized. The age of the samurai would come to an end, and the modern day Japan would be born.

Emperor Mutsuhito
When he was appointed as Emperor in 1867, a new centralized government replaced the old shogunate system. The new era that was taking place was called the Meiji era, which means enlightened rule. During his time as Emperor he supported Westernization and developing a modernized Japan. The first Japanese railroad was constructed in 1872 on his orders. Emperor Mutsuhito even wore western clothes and had western cuisine served for himself. This dramatic change in Japan's leadership brought about the modern day Japan.
